Sylvie is not currently taking any new massager therapy patients. Those who schedule in with her but have not seen her before will have their appointments cancelled.

Dr. Kallie Doucette is currently on maternity leave until May 2025. Dr. Shayla Garland will be providing Virtual Naturopathic Appointments while Dr. Doucette is away.

Dr. Shayla Garland, Naturopathic Doctor, is dedicated to guiding and empowering individuals on their health journeys. Her approach combines evidence-based care with a holistic understanding of the body’s messages to support healing and balance.

Dr. Garland’s treatments centre around diet, lifestyle, and natural therapies that encourage the body to heal and return to balance. Every person is unique, and Dr. Shayla approaches each case with the belief that finding the root cause of disease is essential for lasting healing. Physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health are interconnected and affecting one another, so as many of these levels are addressed as possible.

Dr. Ryan Hoetmer is the owner of Sparwood Chiropractic and Wellness. He relocated back here to Canada in 2013 after living and working in New Zealand for 5 years.

Dr. Hoetmer grew up north of Edmonton, Alberta and received his Bachelor of Science from the University of Alberta before moving to Portland, Oregon, USA where he completed his Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.). Not yet ready to face the cold, harsh winters of northern Alberta he moved to warmer climates in Christchurch, New Zealand. During his time in New Zealand, Dr. Hoetmer worked at a large multidisciplinary sports clinic as well as a smaller rural community clinic. In addition to working at the clinics Dr. Hoetmer also served as the team chiropractor for the local representative ice hockey team as well as the New Zealand National Ice Hockey Team “Ice Blacks” travelling to Australia, Iceland, and Austria with them for international competitions. His time in the USA and NZ has also given him the chance to work with local recreational / representative rugby, soccer, netball, and baseball players as well helping to keep swimmers, runners, triathletes, and cyclists doing what they love.

To help correct the alignment of the spine Dr. Hoetmer uses manual adjustments as well as more gentle techniques including using the activator and drop table. Other therapies include shockwave therapy, ultrasound, and trigger point therapy when needed. Over the last few years he has also completed extra certification in Kinesiotaping, Active Release Technique (ART), Craniosacal Therapy, Clinical Neurodynamics, Foot Biomechanics, Gait Analysis, and Custom Orthotics.

When Ryan is not busy working he can be found busy with his wife Corinne and his two sons Kieran and Rowan hiking, running, camping, skiing and exploring everything that the Elk Valley has to offer. Ryan also spends his time volunteering with the local Lion’s Club, the Sparwood Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and Fernie Search and Rescue.

Dr. Hoetmer enjoys treating everyone from newborns to grandmothers, professional athletes to weekend warriors and everyone in between. He looks forward to working everyday with the goal of helping each person to live a healthier, happier, and more productive life.

Shawn completed a B.Sc in Human Kinetics (Hon) at the University of Ottawa in 1996. He then moved to BC with the idea of skiing for one year before continuing his studies. But the mountains wouldn’t let him leave, and he dove headfirst into the ski industry, working as a ski instructor, pro ski patrol, avalanche technician and finally as a professional ski guide under the ACMG.

In 2009 Shawn returned to his long- held goal of becoming a physiotherapist , and he earned a Master’s in Physical Therapy from UBC in 2011. Since then, he has taken multiple courses in manual therapy and vestibular rehabilitation. Shawn has worked in the Elk Valley since 2011 with all types of clients. He is experienced in rehabilitation of athletes, ICBC and WorkSafe BC clients. Shawn’s treatment style focuses on exercise and movement patterns as he strives to incorporate the patient’s lifestyle and athletic goals into highly personalized treatment plans.

When not at work Shawn can be found on the slopes skiing, on the trails mountain biking, or enjoying time with his two wonderful kids.

Shawn is registered to provide treatment for ICBC, WorksafeBC, MSP, RCMP, and Veterans/Armed Forces. He is also set up for direct billing for several private insurance companies. Emilee is an Elk Valley born and raised local having lived in Sparwood most of her life. She graduated from the CMTCA accredited Massage Therapy program at Lethbridge college with 2200 hours of instruction and practicum experience.

Emilee specializes in General Swedish Massage Therapy and Relaxation Massage. She is passionate about helping to promote healing and wellness in her clients through these techniques. She tailors every client’s treatment specifically to them, by listening to them and reflecting on how to be the most effective.

Outside of work Emilee can be found in the mountains hiking with friends, camping with her family, or curling up with a good book.

Dr. Amanda Wyss completed Chiropractic School at RMIT in Melbourne, Australia in 1991. After”working out” the kinks in the outback for 3 years, she returned to her home city of Melbourne where she had a seaside practice in the town of Rosebud for 16 years. In 1994 she completed her Graduate Diploma in Animal Chiropractic and added a new dimension to her already thriving practice.

Eventually she grew tired of the perfect weather, and living at the beach. In 2008 she sold her practice and moved to Fernie, to live in a place that had skiing outside her backdoor. 13 years later she is no longer enjoying the legendary Fernie powder but admits to embracing other aspects of “Valley Life”, including archery, hunting, quading, and trap shooting.

With over thirty years in practice, Dr. Wyss has experience in many different chiropractic techniques and enjoys treating all that come her way!

Sylvie is originally from the Czech Republic but has called the Elk Valley home since 2013. She completed her massage therapy training at the Alberta College of Massage Therapy in 2020 and is now a B.C. Registered Massage Therapist.

Her fascination with the intricate workings of the human body and her interest in helping others to feel their best began at an early age, eventually following in her family’s footsteps to become a massage therapist. She understands that aches and pains of any type can lead to other mental and physical issues such as sleeplessness, anxiety, loss of concentration and lack of motivation.

Sylvie prides herself on her talent for deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, and Swedish massage. Other key areas of interest include relaxation massage, shoulder and neck dysfunction, low back, and headache pain relief. However, her true passion is to utilize massage for the purpose of encouraging and promoting the body to heal through the body’s own natural and innate healing abilities.

Outside of work Sylvie interests vary from travelling and writing to exploring the mountains of Canada by snowboard, skis, bike and on foot.

Krystal Appleby, RAc, completed her training in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Acupuncture at the Alberta College of Acupuncture & TCM in Calgary in 2017. Following her graduation, she returned to Fort McMurray to establish her own clinic. Committed to continuous learning, Krystal has pursued further education, including studies in Hangzhou, China, and courses in sports medicine acupuncture, mental health, and energetics.

Krystal is passionate about integrating clients’ understanding of physical anatomy and physiology with an exploration of their environmental and emotional stressors. Her goal is to achieve a balanced dynamic that promotes long-lasting, pain-free, fulfilling, and purposeful living.

With extensive experience in running, CrossFit, and yoga, Krystal approaches each client with curiosity, seeking to understand the underlying causes of symptoms and the messages conveyed by persistent pain beyond acute sprains and strains. She employs a comprehensive treatment plan that includes acupuncture, TCM, cupping, guasha, and hands-on assessment to support clients in achieving their desired outcomes. Krystal is adept at treating a variety of conditions, with a particular interest in addressing stubborn pain and mental health issues. Originally from a lobster fishing village in Prince Edward Island, Dr. Kallie Doucette, N.D. has been slowly moving her way west. She completed a Bachelor of Science in Human Kinetics at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, then went on to complete her naturopathic training through the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto. She started practicing as a Naturopathic Doctor in Sudbury, Ontario then after falling in love with the mountains moved to the Elk Valley in 2018.

Kallie treats people of all ages and a wide variety of health conditions, but has a special interest in women’s hormonal health, burnout, fatigue, thyroid disease, digestive complaints, and post-concussion syndrome, pregnancy and post-partum. She has additional training in children’s health from her internship at the Robert Schad Naturopathic Clinic.

Kallie’s goal with her patients is to figure out the underlying root cause of their health concerns so they can get back to feeling great. She helps people move away from band-aid solutions and quick fixes, and is passionate about helping her patients implement a health plan that works with their busy lifestyle. When working with her patients, she uses comprehensive laboratory testing, nutritional supplementation, herbal medicine, acupuncture, stress management tools, and lifestyle counselling. Kallie also has a prescribing license which allows her to prescribe medication such as hormone replacement therapy (HRT) when indicated for her patients.

When Kallie is not busy working she can be found exploring the mountains, learning to garden, or hanging out around a camp fire. She enjoys rock climbing, hiking, snowboarding, yoga, and mountain biking.

Originally from Kingston, Ontario, Andrew attended Queen’s University for a Bachelor of Kinesiology. Drawn to the world of health care, he then attended the compressed time-frame RN program at Western University. After practicing as RN for 2 years he realized a new goal to combine his passion for healthcare and his personal interests in sport, exercise and rehabilitation. Becoming a physiotherapist was the clear choice for pursuing this goal and he returned to Queen’s to complete his Masters in Physiotherapy.

Andrew is an avid cyclist and, in the summer of 2018, cycled 7,380 km unsupported from Victoria, BC to St. John’s, NL. Cycling continues to be one of his passions both on the road and on the trails. Andrew has also been involved in triathlon for the last 5 years and has completed 3 Half Ironman races. He is looking forward to getting back into racing after a couple of years of cancelations. As he is new in town, Andrew is also very excited to be so close to the world class hiking, biking, and skiing in the Elk Valley.

As a therapist, Andrew is all about encouraging pain free movement through the use of exercise, manual therapy and physiotherapy modalities. He is a self-described generalist and has knowledge in treating a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. He is particularly interested in helping active persons of all ages return to their recreational activities, pain free! He takes a client centred approach to develop an individualized treatment plan to achieve your goals.
